Syringa hyacinthiflora „Pocahontas”
‘Pocahontas’ S. ×hyacinthiflora
Skinner, 1935, Canada; S II
Shrubs are of medium height. Inflorescences are very large - 25 x 15 cm, more often consisting of one loose, bent pair of faces. Flowers are violet-purple, large, and simple with a faint aroma.
In 1995, the Disney studio's full-length animation "Pocahontas", dedicated to an unusual Indian girl, was released. Interestingly, 1595 is often mentioned as one of Pocahontas' possible years of birth - no more precise data are known; she may as well have been born in 1590 as well as 1596. Her father was a chief of more than 30 Algonquin Indian tribes, and although none of the 27 children of Powhatan is directly considered the heir to his title, it remains that Pocahontas was the chief's favourite daughter.
Interestingly, Disney's Pocahontas, despite its many historical inaccuracies, was the first to take on the story of an adult colourful woman. The Pocahontas' tribe, on the other hand, was recognised by the US government only in 2015 - almost 400 years after Pocahontas' death and 20 years after the cartoon.
